This is probably Africa's most famous cryptid: a large, sauropod-like beast dwelling in the depths of lakes. It may be carnivorous or herbivorous, and it is almost entirely aquatic. The name mokele-mbembe means "one who stops the flow of rivers," which fits with the animal's aquatic nature. It is described as being the size of an elephants, and it may have a short trunk like a tapir. It has a tiny head atop a long neck. This neck has often been, at first, mistaken by natives for an elephant's trunk before they realized the true nature of the beast. The creature is usually depicted as orange, red, or peach-colored. Mokele-Mbembe is one of five cryptids who supposedly dwell in the Congo and resemble mesozoic creatures. It is the most famous and the most likely to exist. There are many documented sightings of it, ranging from the native tribes hundreds of years ago to the present day.
